Hatteras Village

Cape Hatteras

Enjoy a leisurely drive along the southern dog-leg of Hatteras Island, referred to by the Hatteras Indians of long ago as "Croatoan." Today these are the beautifully-sublime villages of Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras. You'll hear stories about Buxton Woods, the largest maritime forest in the United States; historic Trent (Frisco), the Island's oldest community, and the once-vibrant world seaport of Hatteras and it's fascinating evolution.

Highlights of the tour include:

Hatteras Weather Station

"Let there be Light(s)"

Alexander Hamilton, that guy on our $10 bill today, is a Hatteras Island hero. Without him, there's no lighthouses on the American shoreline.

"Wash-Ups, Been-Here's, and Come-Here's"

The natives and locals may have gotten on this sandbar in different ways, but one thing's for sure, we've all got sand in our shoes and salt water in our veins!

"Somethin' Fishy"

Hatteras village was once home to the largest active Porpoise Fishery in North America.

"Blue-eyed Indians"

English explorer John Lawson lands at King's Point in April 1701 and is "shocked and amazed" at what he discovers.

"Weather? Yeah, we got that"

Hatteras village housed one of the nation's earliest and most critical weather stations with many "Firsts" and a dark secret with it.

"When Hatteras was the Capitol"

President Abraham Lincoln took seriously the Hatteras Convention of 1861 to expedite the end of the Civil War."

This is a tour of the northern most villages on Hatteras Island from Kinnakeet to Chicamacomico.  Now that's a mouthful. For those who are not familiar with Hatteras Island, this tour includes the villages of Avon, Salvo, Waves and Rodanthe.

Cruise the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway, step back in time and experience Avon village and the tri-villages of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo the way it used to be. This popular tour is a buzz saw of Native American heritage, barrier island dynamics and coastal processes, personalities of long-ago, and a boatload of neat information like the origin of place names, wreck commissioners and Civil War and U.S. Lifesaving Service history.

Highlights of the tour include:

"The Midgetts are BIG around here"

Learn the fascinating history of this iconic Outer Banks

     surname.

"The Chicamacomico Races"

Betcha didn't know that this area was pivotal in the outcome

     of the Civil War

"Ribbon of Sand"

There's more geologic energy in one tidal cycle than a

     volcanic eruption.

"Moments of Sheer Terror"

Strap yourself in and experience the realities of this

     dangerous profession.

"King Kinnakeet"

Solve the mystery of The Lost Colony with the tribal leader

     who knew....
